Equipment Module:

The Piping Module will calculate pressure drop, velocity, flow rate, and pipe diameter. Equivalent lengths of fittings & valves are calculated by either L/D or K methods. The calculated pressure drop (or any other data) is available to other C-MAX modules for energy, economic, or performance analysis. Various engineering formulas are offered for user choice for single phase liquid, gas, and steam flow pipe sizing. The friction factor and pipe internal diameters are computed automatically. The piping module is designed using Crane Technical Paper No. 410, "Flow of Fluids through Valves, fittings, and pipe." A Two Phase Flow pipe design and Piping Network Modules will be added in a future enhancement.

The Pump Module will calculate break horse power (hp), name plate hp, total dynamic head (TDH), and flow rate for a centrifugal pumping system. A backward pump flow rate or TDH calculation is performed if motor power draw data are available. An efficiency calculation of an Adjustable Frequency Drive (ASD) is performed based on a computed motor speed fraction, and the ASD efficiency is updated in the applicable case study. The part load efficiency of certain name plate horse power motors is computed and used in the calculations. Pump curves are plotted under various operating conditions for a single pump or up to three parallel pumping configuration systems. Adjustments to the pump efficiency and system pressure drops, including control valve DP, are made automatically when the pump is operated on its base characteristic curve. The module provides for fluid viscosity corrections as chosen by the user. A connectivity to MotorMaster (DOE managed electric motor database) is planned in a future upgrade of C-MAX. The pump module is designed using Cameron Hydraulic Data Book and Goulds Pump Manual.

The Fan/Blower Module has similar functionality as the pump module. It uses industry standard algorithms and methods for the systems evaluation. The fan curves are plotted for damper control, inlet guide vanes, and variable speed control (ASD). The fan/blower module is designed using Buffalo Forge Company's Fan Engineering Handbook and Mark's Standard Handbook for Mechanical Engineers.

The Compressor Modules are designed for centrifugal compressor and positive displacement (reciprocating & rotary screw) compressor systems. It uses appropriate polytropic or adiabatic equations for either centrifugal or reciprocating compressor respectively. Performance curve(s) along with its surge curve and system curve(s) for centrifugal compressor are plotted. A part-load performance curve for positive displacement compressor is also developed which is used for energy & flow capacity calculations. The module is designed using Ingersoll-Rand Compressed Air and Gas Data book, Compressed Air and Gas Handbook (a CAGI publication), and various engineering handbooks.

Equipment Curve Module:

C-MAX plots pump and fan characteristic and system curves under various "what if" case studies. As many as five different characteristic curves for Base Case and ECM cases can be plotted on a single graph. New operating points are clearly marked. Equipment efficiency and horsepower curves are also plotted.

Centrifugal Compressor Curve Module describe the performance characteristics of centrifugal compressor at a fixed impeller speed. This module describes the characteristics by plotting a series of curves with Capacity as the abscissa and Polytropic Head as the ordinate.

Positive Displacement Compressor Curve Module plots "part-load" performance curves (% capacity versus % power) for positive displacement compressors such as reciprocating and rotary screws. The curve is used to calculate power usage at part-load conditions, as well as, the decrease in adiabatic efficiency.

C-MAX computes new ASD speed or new impeller diameter that meets the system requirements. It then plots the new pump or fan curve and labels the motor speed or impeller diameter on the curves.

Analysis Module:

ECM Module will let user select two types of Energy Conservation Measures (ECM) comparison methods. In a "simple" method, as many as five operating scenarios for the Base Case and post ECM case for the pump. fan or compressor system can be selected. In the second selection method, It is further enhanced to provide unlimited case study choices to provide an off-line simulation capability.

Economic Evaluation Module will provide information on "life-cycle" cost of a selected equipment system and energy conservation measure study. It normalizes variable and fixed cost of operating an equipment system per unit of flow or production. It will provide a present value of owing, operating and maintaining an equipment system over its life cycle. Various case studies can then be compared & evaluated on an equal "normalized" basis. Four depreciation methods are provided with user selected tax rate & year. Flexible inflationary rates can individually be applied to maintenance labor, electricity, water, and lube oil over the project life. An adjustment to cash flow is made when energy recovery is implemented.

Non-Energy Benefits Module allows user to choose from fifteen (15) non-energy benefit items such as production increase, quality improvement, air emission decrease or labor reduction. An individual life cycle can be applied to each benefit item with its respective inflation factor to globally account for a total net present value of NE Benefits that will be applicable to the selected case study. At users option, the net present value can be integrated with the outputs from the Economic Evaluation (Life Cycle Cost) Module.

Performance Chart Module will plot bar charts of key engineering, economic, and performance parameters of various selected cases of equipment systems, energy conservation measure studies, and economic evaluation studies

Supporting Module:

Utilities Rate Module calculates Basic Energy Charge, Demand Charge, Reactive Charges with custom rate adjustment. It allows for summer and winter demand charge rate differences based on three levels of load commitments. It also computes summer and winter basic energy charge based on two "blocks" of energy & cost levels. The stored Electrical Utility Name and Applicable Rate Schedule can be recalled and applied to any selected equipment module.

Physical & Chemical Properties Modules computes various properties (such as density, viscosity, vapor pressure, etc.) for the stored gases or fluids. User can create a custom properties data base and use it in the C-MAX calculation modules.

Engineering Unit Module will allow selection of U.S. units or S.I. Units in the calculation. A user can apply module specific units which could be other than the default units. All unit conversions occur seamlessly and are transparent to the user.

Import Module allows external database file to be imported in C-MAX system modules such as pump, fan, compressor, and piping. You can import Tabbed Delimited and Comma Delimited text files by mapping the source file records to the selected C-MAX module records. You can select the engineeing units between U.S and S.I.

Export Module allows you to export data from C-MAX module pump, fan, compressor, and piping. You can export one record or all records (with engineering units) as Tabbed Delimited text, Comma Delimited text, and Excel files.
